The Dangling Conversation

An excerpt from Fred Wiseman's 1968 documentary "Highschool"

  1. Excellent. And timely. I have high school and poetry on my mind. My 16 year old niece has recently taken an interest in poetry and is asking me for suggestions.

    1. What recommendations are you giving her? Just curious!

And regarding your Youtube question - it's not silly at all! I just don't really have an answer.
It's not me. Just a guess, but I think my videos are a little obscure with not a whole lot of views, which helps.

    2. I'm considering 'I Was the Jukebox' by Sandra Beasley, but I want to look through it again before I decide. The last time I gave her a book of poems was 6 years ago. She's just now reading it, 'Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle'. So far I've shared three more poems with her, but I'm nervous about recommending books. I don't want to recommend anything too adult before she is ready and I don't want to suggest anything too childlike. The poems I shared were 'This Is Just To Say' by William Carlos Williams, 'Jilted' by Sylvia Plath, and her grandpa's favorite, 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening' by Robert Frost. I thought she'd like Jilted the most, but Robert Frost was her favorite of the three.

I'm open to poetry suggestions. Any ideas?

And thanks for sharing your YouTube non-secret.

    3. How do you feel about Elizabeth Bishop? She was one of the poets I was drawn to fairly young.
"Sailing Alone Around the Room" by Billy Collins is the first book of poetry I read from start to finish and enjoyed in my teens. The first poem I read of his is called "Passengers" and I was like...I didn't know you could write a poem about something like that It made me love poetry even more.

    4. Thanks, Ann. I haven't read Elizabeth Bishop in a while, but I'll change that. Billy Collins is a great call. I did send her "I Was the Jukebox", as a start.

  2. Silly question, but if I'm remembering correctly, your YouTube posts never show ads. How do you do it?

The exchange of ideas is a key part of the human experience, don't you think? I would love to hear from you.
