Lately

"Even when one is no longer attached to things, it's still something to have been attached to them."
Marcel Proust

As a person who often mourns departures and detachments, I find these words comforting.

It's from Remembrance of Things Past, but I found this gem in Anne Fadiman's essay "Collecting Nature" where she meanders through literary and childhood anecdotes. (As children, she and her brother collected natural curiosities and filled a spare room they called The Serendipity Museum of Nature. How amazing! )

Needless to say, I've been wolfing down her book of essays, and I can't recommend it enough.

  2. I have a feeling you will love it, Denise. Let me know how you like it!

Her other book of essays Ex Libris is also a good read (all about books and reading).

Also, I meant to tell you - I went to a Mark Strand reading at my local bookstore the other day. It was such a big moment. It was delightful to hear him read his poetry. Such a lovely man, really.

The exchange of ideas is a key part of the human experience, don't you think? I would love to hear from you.
